I played a lot of games so far this year, most of them from a single franchise.

Resident Evil

Here are the all the RE games I played this year, in the order I played them.

  • Resident Evil 9 Requiem
  • Resident Evil 2 (remake) (two playthroughs first as Leon then as Claire)
  • Resident Evil 3 (remake)
  • Resident Evil 4 (remake)
  • Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
  • Resident Evil 8 Village
  • Resident Evil 1 (2002 remake, played on Nintendo Switch 2)

I think Resident Evil 1 Remake went on just a bit too long but it was still great. I’m working on a second play through of Resident Evil 9 right now, and then I kind of want to go back and replay 2,3,4 remakes.

I played Resident Evil 1 and 2 on the original Playstation, I remember them being really hard, loading times being awaful and I generally didn’t have fun playing them. As a Dreamcast guy back in the day I played a bunch of Code Veronica, but it was the same story as RE 1 and 2 for me - I just didn’t enjoy the inventory management, or the tank controls. I also played Resident Evil 4 on the original Gamecube back in 2005. The tank controls were a real struggle for me and because of that I never beat it, or played it for more than a couple of hours. 2005 was the last time I paid any attention to Resident Evil, like I didn’t even know any of these remakes existed, or that RE7 and RE8 existed. Somehow I was on total Resident Evil blackout. I only bought RE9 because my wife was out of town and I needed something to do for a few days. I’m very happy the tank controls are gone, inventory management isn’t a total nightmare, and the games are more approachable now. Can’t wait for the Veronica Remake

Other (great) games

Control (PS5): this was amazing, so strange and good.

Dragon Quest 2 HD (Nintendo Switch 2): this was a Dragon Quest game and I played it, and it was fine. I played through the Dragon Quest 1 and 3 remakes last year adn this is similar enough - kind of a comfort RPG series. I have Dragon Quest 7 Remake waiting on my shelf for me whenever I can get rid of this Resident Evil that has me in its grip.

Started, but did not finish

Resident Evil 5: I barely played, I hated the tank controls. I hated the tank controls in RE4 on Gamecube when it came out too, so no surprise I still hate them. There’s also some racist stuff happening in here.

Resident Evil 6: I played an hour or two, it was not very fun.

Pokémon Legends ZA: I did not finish - fun a for a bit but I got bored, it was no Arceus.

Robocop Rogue City: did not finish - this was super cheap on sale, very 6/10 FPS I think

Atomfall: did not finish, played about 6 hours, it was alright then I got busy for a bit and had no desire too start again)

Death Stranding: played like 2 or 3 hours and wasn’t having a great time. I see how it could be amazing with the music and landscapes, but I just couldn’t get in to it. Maybe its just not the right time, I’d like to revisit it when I have time to just sit down and appreciate it.

Advance Wars Reboot Camp: I still play this once in a while, the campaign is fun but some of the battles really drag on.
